Emergency Alerts: Your Lifesaver on Mobile
The UK government’s Emergency Alerts system is designed to warn you instantly if there’s a life-threatening danger nearby. Whether you’re on your phone or tablet, you’ll get vital safety advice the moment an emergency strikes.
What Triggers an Emergency Alert?
- Severe flooding
- Fires
- Extreme weather conditions
- Public health emergencies
These alerts come only from trusted sources:
- Emergency services
- Government departments, agencies, and public bodies handling emergencies
What Happens When Your Phone Gets an Alert
- Your device will blast a loud siren-like sound – even if on silent
- It may vibrate to grab your attention
- The alert will be read aloud
The noise and vibration last about 10 seconds. The message includes a phone number or a link to GOV.UK for more details.
Alerts are based on your current location, not your home or work address. And don’t worry – you don’t need to enable location services to get them.
How to React When You Get an Alert
Stop what you’re doing immediately and follow the instructions in the alert.
If you’re driving or riding, find a safe spot to pull over before checking your device. Got a passenger? Ask them to read out the alert for you – it’s illegal to use a handheld device while driving.
Can Everyone Receive These Alerts?
If your device isn’t compatible, emergency services use other methods to keep you informed about threats to life. These alerts won’t replace your regular news sources like TV or social media.
If you’re deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or partially sighted, attention signals using sound and vibration will alert you.
What Language Are Alerts Sent In?
Alerts are primarily in English. In Wales, they may also be sent in Welsh.
