Car Crash in Belvedere Leaves Passengers Trapped
Emergency services raced to Picardy Road, Belvedere, this evening after a car smashed into the central barrier and flipped over. Several people were trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
Firefighters Use Cutting Tools to Rescue Victims
The crash happened near Asda Belvedere just before 8pm on Sunday, 9 April 2023. Police, fire crews, and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service all rushed to the scene. Firefighters stabilised the crushed car and used cutting equipment and rams to free those trapped inside.
A specialist Paramedic “HART” team was also called in to assist the injured. Two people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Road Closures and Bus Disruptions
The collision forced a full road closure in both directions. Local buses on routes 229, 401, and 469 have been rerouted, causing disruption for commuters. Drivers are urged to avoid Picardy Road and find alternative routes.
One bystander reported seeing blue salvage sheets and a tent erected at the scene, highlighting the severity of the rescue operation.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly before 8pm on Sunday to reports of an overturned car on Lower Road in Belvedere. Emergency services attended swiftly. Two people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”
