Two Former Sussex Cops Busted in Accelerated Misconduct Hearings
Speedy Hearings for Serious Police Misconduct
Two ex-officers faced swift misconduct hearings at Sussex Police HQ in Lewes on Wednesday, April 19. These accelerated hearings happen only when evidence is rock-solid and the public interest demands quick action — either immediate dismissal or barring from the force.
PC Matthew Jukes Caught Downloading Prohibited Porn
Matthew Jukes, 23, stationed with West Sussex division, was accused of downloading illegal pornography, triggering a criminal probe by Sussex Police. Suspended during the investigation, the evidence confirmed Jukes had downloaded vast quantities of banned images, some while on duty. He admitted to bulk downloading, breaching professional standards.
Chief Constable Shiner ruled the allegations proven and said Jukes would have been sacked – but he had already quit.
PC Daniel Matthews Nabbed with Class A, B & C Drugs
Another former West Sussex cop, Daniel Matthews, 48, was found off duty in possession of controlled drugs including class A, B, and C substances. Following a police investigation, Matthews accepted a caution for drug possession under the Misuse of Drugs Act. His behaviour was deemed discreditable and fell short of police standards.
Chief Constable Shiner confirmed Matthews also would have been dismissed if he hadn’t resigned first.
