‘Room of Doom’ Judge Sparks Secret Recordings and Family Fury
A notoriously “hard-faced” and strict judge struck fear into families appearing before her, prompting a surge in secret recordings inside the closed Family Court. Dubbed the “Room of Doom,” this secretive courtroom handled thousands of cases across Hampshire, where children were often ordered into social services care, foster placements, or adoption — sparking fierce criticism from the High Court, campaign groups, and documentaries alike.
Children Snatched on Shaky Grounds
Judge Helen Black frequently authorised the removal of children based on flimsy or no evidence presented by social workers and CAFCASS, even while investigations were ongoing. Some of her most controversial rulings have since been overturned or heavily criticised at appeal.
Lord Justice Baker said: “Judge Black is a highly respected and very experienced family judge who is well aware of the need to ensure that the line between robustness and unfairness is not crossed. I regret to say however that I am in no doubt that the line was crossed in this case.”
Shock Rulings: Teen Mum Forced to Give Up Baby After 13-Minute Hearing
In one headline-grabbing case, Judge Black ordered a 16-year-old mother to surrender her baby for adoption after a hearing lasting under an hour. She spent just 13 minutes listening to evidence before deciding the teen “had failed to show she knew what being a parent is about.”
The judgment, a mere 360 words long, left critics stunned. “Forced adoption” orders like this were slammed as rushed and unjust by family rights campaigners.
Genetic Mother’s Rights Trampled — Appeal Demands Fresh Look
In another bitterly contested case, Judge Black ruled that a genetic mother had no parental status and denied her rights, favouring the birth mother’s sole residence order for twins. She expressed concerns about the genetic mother’s parenting abilities and potential risks if shared parental responsibility was granted.
However, under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008, the genetic mother challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal. Three judges ruled the original decision was “built on foundations which were rather wobbly” and sent the case back to the county court for reconsideration.
Forced Adoption Network Welcomes Judge Black’s Retirement
Judge Black retired on 28th March 2023. The Forced Adoption Network hailed her departure as “long overdue” and a victory for the families harmed by her “mis-judged and biased rulings.”
They revealed how many innocent children were torn from their birth families based on “unproven facts and lies of social workers” during her tenure, with appeals often coming too late to repair the damage. Forced adoption orders, they warn, have left children trapped with paid adopters against their parents’ wishes.
“Hopefully now families facing the court on unsound accusations have a better chance of keeping their children,” the campaign group said.
