Mammoth Meth Haul Hidden in Cow Skins Busted in Australia
In a massive drug bust, Australian authorities seized a staggering 668kg of crystal methamphetamine—the largest onshore meth haul from Mexico at the time. The shipment, cleverly concealed inside raw animal skins, was stopped from flooding Melbourne’s streets with more than 6.6 million doses.
Frozen Cow Skins Contained 167 Hidden Meth Packages
The joint sting operation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Australian Border Force (ABF) kicked off on 10 August 2019, after a shipping container labeled “Salty Bovine Skin Cuero Verde Salado De Bovino” arrived from Mexico. Inside, officers found 18 pallets stacked with frozen, raw, untreated cow hides.
Closer inspection revealed 167 silver packets stuffed with a white crystalline substance. Forensic tests confirmed the deadly cargo was high-grade crystal methamphetamine.
Crime Boss Caught and Slapped with 22-Year Sentence
Authorities arrested a 45-year-old Mexican national, linked to an organised crime syndicate, on 28 August 2019. After a 12-week trial, a Victorian County Court jury found him guilty of importing commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs in October 2022.
On 5 May 2023, he was slammed with a hefty 22-year prison sentence, with a minimum of 15 years behind bars before parole eligibility.
Law Enforcement Warns: Meth Smugglers Will Use Any Hideout
“Hiding drugs in untreated cow hides presented a significant biological hazard for AFP officers extracting the methamphetamine. It also demonstrates the unsafe, disgusting journey drugs can often take on their way to a consumer,” said AFP Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall.
“These organised crime syndicates inflict human suffering at all stages of their activities—from Mexico’s supply chains to the devastating impact on Australian users and their families.”
ABF Superintendent Dan Peters added: “Our technical expertise and cutting-edge tech mean we’ll find drugs, no matter how cunning the concealment.” He hailed the operation as a prime example of teamwork smashing organised crime’s deadly trade.
