Brutal Abuser John Copeland Jailed for 3 Years After Terrifying Reign of Terror
Pregnant Victim Smashed with Glass Vase
John Copeland has been locked up for three years following a shocking campaign of mental and physical abuse against his girlfriend. Over three long years, Copeland controlled and assaulted his victim repeatedly. The worst attack saw him smash a glass vase over her head while she was heavily pregnant, causing serious injuries to her hand.
Victim Speaks Out on Lasting Trauma
In court, the victim revealed the deep scars Copeland’s violence left behind. She said, “Although the physical scars from the physical abuse John subjected me to have faded or disappeared, the mental scars I now have are unhealable. They will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
She added, “I find it difficult to build any form of relationships such as friendships and relationships. I find it so hard to trust others and let myself be vulnerable again. I want this whole ordeal to be over, however what I can say is since leaving this abusive relationship, even though it’s been incredibly difficult time, I’ve achieved a lot in the last year.”
Police Praise Victim’s Courage, Urge Others to Speak Up
Acting Sergeant Ceire Kinsella, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s strength throughout the process. She said, “Copeland’s sustained abuse and controlling behaviour made his victim feel as though she had no way out. He showed no regard for the woman he was meant to be in a loving and caring relationship with.”
Kinsella continued, “Copeland’s behaviour was truly despicable, and this type of abuse can have devastating and long-lasting psychological effects. I hope this sentencing shows victims that even if the abuse happened months or years ago, we will still pursue justice. I urge anyone facing abuse, past or present, to come forward.”
Copeland Pleads Guilty, Sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court
Copeland, formerly of Hesley Road in Shiregreen, admitted to Section 20 assault, coercive control, and breaching a restraining order at an earlier hearing. On 5 May, Sheffield Crown Court sentenced him to three years behind bars and slapped on a ten-year restraining order to protect the victim. Justice served.
