Crackdown on Modern Slavery: Police Raid Swindon Homes

Police launched a major national operation targeting modern slavery and human trafficking in Swindon. Over three weeks, officers, backed by the Medaille Trust charity, raided eight properties suspected of housing exploited sex workers.

Protecting the Exploited

The operation focused on safeguarding vulnerable adults forced into sex work by criminal gangs. Some victims are even children caught in this vile trade. Officers aimed to understand how these sex workers are recruited to smash organised crime rings behind the scenes.

“Sex workers are hidden within our community, and we want to provide them with support and help to get the services they need to stop exploitation happening within our community,” said Detective Inspector Eirin Martin.

She added: “Wiltshire Police is committed to protecting vulnerable individuals. Together with the Medaille Trust and other partners, we are visiting addresses across Swindon to tackle sexual exploitation head-on.”

Community Urged to Report Suspicious Activity

Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson stressed the importance of public help. “This exploitation must stop. Operations like Aidant are vital. If you see something suspicious, report it. Your information can help build a strong case to protect victims hidden in plain sight.”

Wilkinson said sex workers often face dehumanisation and coercion but added that working with charities like Medaille offers a vital lifeline to help victims escape exploitation.

Charity and Police Working Together

Marcus Dawson, Director of Police and Justice Partnerships at the Medaille Trust, praised the collaboration. “Justice for survivors comes from a multi-agency approach. Many struggle to trust law enforcement, but Medaille supports victims across the UK. We’re proud to work alongside Wiltshire Police and look forward to future partnerships.”
