Winter Hunger Crisis Looms: Tesco Kicks Off UK’s Biggest Food Drive
With winter set to push food banks to their limits, Tesco is rallying the nation for the UK’s largest food donation blitz. Running from November 30 to December 2, the Tesco Food Collection aims to stockpile vital supplies for the Trussell Trust and FareShare, two charities bracing for record demand.
Food Banks Face Unprecedented Demand This Winter
The Trussell Trust, which runs the largest network of food banks across the UK, expects to hand out over one million emergency food parcels between December and February. FareShare, meanwhile, has a queue of 1,500 frontline charities desperately waiting for food donations.
During the three-day collection, Tesco shoppers will be urged to donate long-life food such as tins, pasta, and cereals. Donations will fund emergency parcels for struggling families via the Trussell Trust and feed thousands of local charities through FareShare’s network of 8,500 community groups.
Volunteers Needed to Power the Collection
This mammoth campaign depends heavily on volunteers staffing collection points and spreading the word. Currently, Tesco and its customers provide one in five food parcels handed out by the Trussell Trust.
“By volunteering at the Tesco Winter Food Collection, you’re helping keep your local food bank stocked and making a real difference to families unable to afford essentials,” said Emma Revie, Chief Executive of the Trussell Trust.
George Wright, FareShare’s Chief Executive, added: “Giving just three hours of your time can dramatically boost donations. We urgently need help to get more people donating during this tough time.”
