In a significant operation, police in Lanarkshire have successfully seized cocaine with an estimated street value of nearly £200,000 during a routine traffic stop on the M74 near Lesmahagow. The incident occurred just before 5 pm yesterday.
Following the traffic stop, two men, aged 35 and 39, were promptly arrested in connection with the illicit drug seizure. They are set to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Boxing Day, and a detailed report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Elliott commended the operation, highlighting its importance in reinforcing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to tackling serious organized crime. He emphasized that this seizure serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts of the Serious Organized Crime Taskforce and Scotland’s Serious Organized Crime Strategy.
Elliott also stressed the adverse impact of drug-related activities on communities, stating, “We will continue to target those intent on profiting from drugs, who give no thought to the misery it causes.
Furthermore, he called upon the public for their support, urging individuals to come forward with any information related to drug-related issues in their communities. By sharing their concerns and providing valuable information, the public plays a crucial role in helping law enforcement build intelligence and effectively combat drug-related problems.
Elliott urged anyone with relevant information to contact the police at 101. Alternatively, individuals who wish to maintain anonymity while reporting information can reach out to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. The assurance of anonymity can encourage more individuals to come forward with vital information that can aid law enforcement efforts to create safer communities.
