Reckless Driver Jailed After Tragic Tractor Crash

Ashley Sceal’s careless mistake left a woman fighting for her life. He failed to secure agricultural machinery on his lorry, causing a terrifying crash on Lewes Road, Blackboys, near Uckfield.

Load Detaches, Causes Horrific Collision

Sceal was hauling a tractor and equipment on a flatbed trailer when the load broke free. The runaway machinery smashed into an oncoming car, seriously injuring a 61-year-old woman from Heathfield. She described the aftermath as “months of hell,” battling both physical and mental scars.

Danger on the Road: Lorry Unfit and Driver on Cocaine

Police found Sceal’s lorry was not roadworthy, making him a serious hazard. Further tests showed he was driving under the influence of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, with levels more than three times over the legal limit.

Sentenced to Prison and Driving Ban

At Lewes Crown Court on December 4, the 31-year-old pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to two years in prison and banned from driving for three years.

Detective Constable Dave Symonds warned: “All drivers of heavy goods vehicles must ensure that loads are securely attached. This collision was easily avoidable, but Sceal failed to meet that basic requirement. He was fortunate not to have killed the victim or anyone else.”

“It highlights the need for all drivers to be considerate of the risks and follow safety steps to prevent such devastating consequences.”
