A reckless driver, Ashley Sceal, faced severe consequences when his failure to properly secure agricultural equipment on his lorry resulted in a harrowing collision, leaving another motorist with life-changing injuries.
The incident occurred on Lewes Road, Blackboys, near Uckfield, where Sceal was responsible for transporting a tractor and machinery on a flatbed trailer. Tragically, the load detached from the vehicle, careening into the path of an oncoming driver.
This catastrophic collision inflicted serious injuries on a 61-year-old woman from Heathfield, who described the aftermath as “months of hell,” profoundly affecting her physical and mental well-being.
A subsequent collision report confirmed that Sceal’s lorry was not roadworthy and posed a danger to others.
At Lewes Crown Court on December 4, the 31-year-old pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries through dangerous driving. He was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison and received a three-year driving ban.
The court learned that the incident occurred on September 12, 2022, at 8 pm when the machinery he was transporting became unhinged, leaving the oncoming motorist with no time to react. Moreover, Sceal was found to be driving under the influence of benzoylecgonine (a cocaine metabolite) with 168 micrograms per litre of blood, well above the legal limit of 50 micrograms per litre of blood.
Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Dave Symonds from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “All drivers of heavy goods vehicles must ensure that loads are securely attached.
“This collision was easily avoidable, but Sceal failed to meet that basic requirement. He was fortunate not to have killed the victim or anyone other road users in this case.
“It highlights the need for all drivers to be considerate of the risks and to follow safety steps to help prevent causing such devastating consequences.”
