Derby Pub Stabbing: Ian Magee Jailed for 8 Years
Ian Magee, 61, from Shalfleet Drive, Alvaston, has been slammed with an eight-year prison sentence for a brutal, unprovoked stabbing in Derby city centre. The attack took place on April 6, 2023, inside the Standing Order pub, leaving a 48-year-old man fighting for his life.
Swift Justice at Derby Crown Court
Magee initially pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. But a jury had other ideas. After less than two hours of deliberation last November, he was found guilty. Today, at 1 Crown Court, he was sentenced to eight years behind bars, with an extended four-year licence period to follow.
Victim’s Life Shattered by Attack
The victim has been left traumatised, suffering from depression and nightmares where he relives the stabbing and fears dying. His daily life has been shattered — he now shuns pubs, town centres, and socialising altogether.
Physically, the stabbing caused permanent damage. He lost sensation on the left side of his jaw and neck, unable to feel his bottom lip or chin. Nightmares torment him with vivid scenes of neck pain and being fatally stabbed.
“Why me? I don’t understand why I was targeted,” the victim said, revealing the deep emotional scars left by the attack.
Police Condemn ‘Utterly Appalling’ Attack
Temporary DC Cathryn Mansfield led the investigation and called the incident “utterly appalling.” She revealed Magee pulled a pocketknife without provocation inside a busy city-centre pub and stabbed a man who had shown no aggression.
DC Mansfield praised pub staff, patrons, and first responders for their quick action, which saved the victim’s life. She hopes the stiff sentence helps the victim start to heal and move on from this horrific ordeal.
