In a commendable display of swift action, Greater Manchester Police arrested a man following the pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle near Market Hall, Ashton Under Lyne, Tameside, on Saturday.
The incident unfolded after police received reports of a stolen vehicle around 1pm. A woman had left her vehicle with the engine running to keep it warm while her 89-year-old mother sat in the passenger seat. Shockingly, a man reportedly entered the car and drove away with the elderly woman still inside.
Local officers promptly pursued the vehicle, with GMP’s Road Policing Unit joining the chase for a short period before safely bringing the car to a stop. Remarkably, there was no damage to the suspected stolen vehicle, and the elderly passenger emerged unharmed. She was safely reunited with her daughter shortly after the incident.
A 50-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of kidnap, theft of a motor vehicle, and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as the investigation progresses.
Chief Inspector Matt Jackson of GMP’s Specialist Operation Branch commended the team’s swift and efficient response, highlighting the potential danger of the incident that was well-managed by the officers. He expressed relief at the safe reunion of the elderly woman with her daughter and emphasised the dedication of GMP officers in handling such situations.
The arrest underscores GMP’s commitment to tackling vehicle crime, and residents are encouraged to report any information or concerns through 101 or the LiveChat facility at gmp.police.uk. Anonymous tips can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
