Man Arrested After Stealing Car With 89-Year-Old Woman Inside
Greater Manchester Police acted swiftly to arrest a man suspected of stealing a car near Market Hall, Ashton Under Lyne, on Saturday afternoon. The daring theft left an elderly passenger trapped inside.
Elderly Woman Snatched Inside Stolen Car
At around 1pm, police were alerted after a woman left her car running to warm up while her 89-year-old mother waited inside. Shockingly, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off with the elderly passenger still inside.
High-Speed Chase Ends Safely
Local officers quickly gave chase, with GMP’s Road Policing Unit joining briefly. They managed to bring the car to a safe stop without any damage or injury. The elderly woman was unharmed and reunited with her daughter shortly after.
Suspect Held on Multiple Charges
A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap, vehicle theft, and dangerous driving. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
“The incident had the potential to be very dangerous but was managed expertly by officers,” said Chief Inspector Matt Jackson. “We are relieved the elderly woman is safe and praise our team for their swift action.”
