Tragic Crash in Blackheath: Teen Killed at Bus Stop
On December 21, 2021, 14-year-old Logan Finch was killed in a shocking crash in Blackheath. Frederick Mansfield, 42, smashed his vehicle into a bus stop, fatally injuring Logan and leaving his aunt, Rachel Poole, seriously hurt. Mansfield now faces trial for causing death by dangerous driving.
Speeding Driver’s Shocking Impact
The horror unfolded around 3:33 pm near Kidbrooke Park Road. Logan, his aunt Rachel, and two cousins waited at the bus stop when Mansfield’s vehicle careened off course. It hit a lamp post before slamming into the bus stop, pinning Logan against it.
Logan was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after, with Rachel sustaining severe leg and chest injuries. CCTV footage captured the terrifying moment, providing a grim record of the tragedy.
Driver’s Changing Story and Medical Claims
Mansfield first blamed a pedal mix-up, then shifted his version, claiming he might have blacked out or fallen asleep behind the wheel. Medical exams later diagnosed him with sleep apnoea, arguing this disturbed sleep condition caused daytime drowsiness and triggered the crash.
But prosecutors fired back. Mansfield’s medical records showed no previous complaints about sleep apnoea, casting doubt on his defence.
Prosecution Hits Back: Driver Should Have Known Better
Prosecutor Rupert Kent said Mansfield should have recognised his tiredness and taken precautions. CCTV evidence revealed brake lights flashing before the crash and the vehicle reversing afterwards, suggesting Mansfield was alert. Plus, Mansfield gave detailed accounts of Logan and Rachel’s positions before impact—unlikely if he’d blacked out.
The prosecution argues Mansfield’s driving fell well below reasonable standards, accusing him of careless and dangerous conduct.
Mansfield Denies All Charges
Living in Hythe’s Imperial Gardens, Mansfield denies causing Logan’s death and Rachel’s injuries by dangerous driving. He also contests lesser charges of causing death and serious injury by careless driving. The harrowing trial is ongoing as the court seeks the truth behind this tragic smash.
