Bexhill carer convicted of manslaughter over toddler’s tragic death
Toddler’s death sparks murder probe
A 27-year-old woman from Bexhill, Shannon Driver, has been found guilty of manslaughter after 18-month-old Jaxon Syrett died from fatal injuries. The little boy was admitted to hospital on September 18, 2020, with severe trauma and passed away six days later, on September 24.
Emergency services rushed to a London Road address after Driver reported that Jaxon had slipped in the shower while she looked after him alone. Despite life-saving efforts, Jaxon’s condition worsened and post-mortem tests revealed the injuries were deliberately inflicted.
Justice for Jaxon after brutal abuse
Driver was arrested and charged following a criminal investigation involving specialist officers supporting Jaxon’s family. On January 17, Lewes Crown Court convicted her of manslaughter. She is due to be sentenced on March 27.
Family pays tribute to ‘cheeky’ Jaxon
“The tragic loss of Jaxon has changed our lives forever,” the family said. “We will never see Jaxon’s cheeky smile again or hear his infectious laugh. We will miss every milestone Jaxon had to reach. Jaxon had his whole life ahead of him. We cherish every memory. We thank everyone involved in the investigation and those who helped secure justice for our baby. The support has been truly appreciated.”
Investigator’s heartfelt message
Police Officer Dick Hemmings said: “This investigation uncovered the most tragic of circumstances. No family should endure what Jaxon’s have faced. I extend my deepest condolences to them. Their strength during a lengthy and delayed court process has been remarkable. While no sentence can undo this loss, the conviction brings us closer to justice.”
