After a protracted six-year wait for justice, the family of 17-year-old Michael Jonas finally saw the culprits behind his tragic murder brought to justice. On November 2, 2017, Michael was lured into Betts Park, Penge, by a group of six men who then brutally stabbed him to death. The attack, shockingly brief yet fatal, ended Michael’s life within 120 seconds, leaving a family and community to mourn the senseless loss of a young life filled with potential.
The London Metropolitan Police, following an arduous investigative process, arrested all six defendants by early December 2017. Despite an initial setback when the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped the case, the charges were reinstated in October 2022, leading to a conviction for murder in November 2023.
The convicted individuals, all of whom played a part in the heinous crime, have been handed life sentences:
- Nyron Jean Baptiste, 22, was sentenced to a minimum of 31 years.
- Divon Henry-Campbell, 23, was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years.
- Jason Smith, 20, sentenced to a minimum of 12.5 years.
- Jamie Marshall, 22, sentenced to a minimum of 13 years.
- Ryan Girense Brown, 21, sentenced to a minimum of 12 years.
- Sarraviho Smith, 23, sentenced to a minimum of 17 years.
Baptiste, notably, was involved in another murder a year after Michael’s, further demonstrating a pattern of violent behaviour. He was previously sentenced to a minimum of 19 years for the murder of 15-year-old Jay Hughes.
In an emotional address at the Old Bailey, Michael’s family shared their profound grief and the irreplaceable loss they’ve suffered. Michael Jonas Senior, Michael’s father, recounted the harrowing moment he learned of his son’s demise and the unbearable task of organizing his funeral. Nobody should have to bury their child first. It is my death sentence,” he expressed, reflecting the anguish that has lingered for six years.
Michael’s mother and sister also shared their sorrow, highlighting Michael’s loving nature, his aspirations, and the void his death has created in their lives. His mother poignantly remembered Michael as a “talented young man with goals and morals,” whose life was cruelly snatched away.
Detective Constable Becky Pitcher, who stood by the Jonas family throughout the investigation, commended their resilience and determination to seek justice for Michael. The family’s gratitude towards DC Pitcher and the murder team underscores the significant role law enforcement played in navigating the complex legal process and ensuring the perpetrators were held accountable.
As the six men begin their sentences, the hope is that this conclusion brings some measure of solace to Michael’s family. While no verdict can undo the tragedy or fill the void left by Michael’s absence, the conviction serves as a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and the enduring strength of a family’s love for their lost son and brother.
