Justice at Last for Teen Stabbed to Death in London Park
After six long years, the killers of 17-year-old Michael Jonas have finally been jailed. Michael was brutally stabbed to death on November 2, 2017, in Betts Park, Penge. He was attacked by six men who lured him to the park and ended his life in just two minutes. The shocking murder left a tight-knit community devastated.
Six Men Sentenced to Life for Michael’s Murder
Following a tough police investigation, all six suspects were arrested by December 2017. Though the case hit a wall when the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges, they were reinstated in October 2022. In November 2023, the court handed down life sentences to all six guilty men:
- Nyron Jean Baptiste, 22 – minimum 31 years
- Divon Henry-Campbell, 23 – minimum 18 years
- Jason Smith, 20 – minimum 12.5 years
- Jamie Marshall, 22 – minimum 13 years
- Ryan Girense Brown, 21 – minimum 12 years
- Sarraviho Smith, 23 – minimum 17 years
Violent Past Haunts Lead Attacker
Nyron Baptiste’s violent record runs deep. A year after Michael’s murder, he killed again – stabbing 15-year-old Jay Hughes to death. Baptiste is already serving a minimum 19-year sentence for that crime.
Family Corps Mourns and Finds Closure
In a heart-wrenching statement at sentencing, Michael’s family reflected the pain they’ve carried for over half a decade. His mother described him as a “talented young man with goals and morals,” whose life was stolen far too soon.
“Michael was full of promise, a loving son and brother. The void his death left can never be filled,” said his mother.
Detective Constable Becky Pitcher, who supported the family throughout the investigation, praised their resilience. The family thanked DC Pitcher and the entire murder team for their unwavering dedication and hard work in securing justice.
As the six men begin long prison terms, the hope is that this guilty verdict brings a measure of peace to Michael’s loved ones. While nothing can undo the tragedy, their fight for justice stands as a powerful tribute to Michael’s memory and a warning to violent offenders everywhere.
