A Yorkshire teen has been locked up after kicking a police dog during an arrest – the region’s first-ever prosecution of its kind.

Police Dog Zero Attacked During July Arrest

The shocking assault happened in the early hours of July 11, 2023. The teenage suspect struck 123 Dog Zero, injuring the dog’s face.

Zero, a key member of the West Yorkshire Police K9 team, required medical treatment but has made a full recovery. The brave dog is set to compete in the Regional Police Dog trials later this year.

Courts Crack Down: Teen Convicted and Sentenced

On January 15, the youth faced Bradford Youth Court. He was found guilty of burglary and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, among other charges.

The judge handed down a 12-month Detention Order plus a four-month youth referral order – a clear message on zero tolerance for abuse against service animals.

Finn’s Law Protects Valued Service Animals

“Our service animals deserve the same protection as any human officer,” said Chief Inspector James Farrar, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Operational Support team and Dog Section.

“This conviction sends a powerful statement that harming these animals is a serious crime.”

The case highlights the importance of the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act – aka Finn’s Law – introduced in 2019. Named after a heroic Hertfordshire Police dog badly injured on duty, the law bars attackers from using self-defense as a justification when harming service dogs or horses.

This landmark sentencing sets a precedent in Yorkshire and boosts protections for the police’s furry frontline heroes.
