On Sunday, February 25, 2024, the Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS) Gris-Nez received alarming news of a migrant boat facing distress off the coast of Calais (62).

In response, CROSS Gris-Nez dispatched Customs patrolman Jacques Oudart Fourmentin (JOF) to assess the situation. Upon arrival, the JOF crew discovered a solitary individual aboard the vessel. Without hesitation, the crew swiftly rescued the shipwrecked man. Subsequently, upon reaching the docks at Boulogne-sur-Mer (62), the individual received immediate assistance from the land rescue services and the Border Police (PAF 62).

The Maritime Prefect of the Channel and the North Sea issues a stern warning to anyone contemplating the perilous journey across the Channel. This maritime route stands as one of the busiest in the world, with over 600 commercial vessels traversing it daily. Furthermore, the area is notorious for its challenging weather conditions, with an average of 120 days per year experiencing winds exceeding force 7. Consequently, despite appearances, navigating these waters poses significant risks.

For those who find themselves in distress at sea or bear witness to maritime incidents, the Maritime Prefect emphasizes the importance of immediate action. Emergency services can be reached by dialing 196 or by tuning in to channel 16 on your VHF radio.
