Heroic Rescue as Migrant Boat Found Adrift Off Calais Coast
Alone and Adrift: Dramatic Sea Rescue
On Sunday, February 25, 2024, the Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS) Gris-Nez sprang into action after receiving a distress call about a migrant boat off the coast of Calais.
Customs patrolman Jacques Oudart Fourmentin (JOF) was dispatched immediately. On arrival, the JOF crew found a lone man stranded on the tiny vessel. Without delay, they pulled him to safety and brought him ashore at Boulogne-sur-Mer, where land rescue and Border Police (PAF 62) provided urgent care.
Channel Crossing: Danger Lurks Beneath Busy Waters
The Maritime Prefect of the Channel and the North Sea issued a stark warning to anyone considering the hazardous Channel crossing. The strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes worldwide, with over 600 commercial vessels navigating it daily.
Adding to the risk are brutal weather conditions. On average, winds exceed force 7 for 120 days a year, making the journey deadly despite calm appearances.
Know What To Do in a Maritime Emergency
The Maritime Prefect urges anyone in distress at sea or witnesses of incidents to act fast. Emergency services can be contacted by dialing 196 or tuning into channel 16 on a VHF radio.
