Top Cop Kath Barnes Awarded for 27 Years of Service

Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes is set to receive a prestigious medal for her outstanding contribution to British policing. The veteran officer, with nearly three decades under her belt, will be honoured at a special ceremony later this year alongside other police heroes from various ranks.

From Hampshire to Thames Valley: A Stellar Career

Kath started her police career in 1992 with Hampshire Constabulary before moving to Thames Valley Police in 2014. She has spent most of her time as a detective tackling major crime, serious organised crime, and economic crime.

Her key role came in 2017 when she became Head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the South East, working within the regional Counter Terrorism Unit hosted by Thames Valley Police.

Humbled and Proud: Kath’s Message

“I am honoured and humbled to learn of this award. Policing is the ultimate team game and in 27 years of service I’ve been inspired and supported by every team I’ve worked with.”

“No police officer could start or end a shift without support from their family too. My family’s love and patience has got me through tricky times and I can’t thank them enough.”

“I’ve had the privilege to work in two fantastic forces and now collaborate with colleagues all across UK policing. It’s the people in the whole policing family who do their best every day to keep people safe, and it’s on their behalf I accept this award with great pride.”

Top Brass Praise Hard Work and Dedication

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, praised Kath’s leadership: “Kath Barnes has shown leadership and resilience that without doubt has helped keep this country safe. I’m delighted her hard work is publicly recognised — it’s well deserved.”
