Train Derailment Sparks Chaos on South Western Railway
Commuters on South Western Railway (SWR) between Surrey and London are in for a nightmare after a train derailed at Walton-on-Thames. The culprit? An object on the track damaged the conductor rail, causing train 2L10, running from Walton-on-Thames to Weybridge, to derail.
Major Damage and Passenger Evacuation
The derailment wreaked havoc, destroying about 30 metres of sleepers, snapping conductor 1, and damaging the signalling system. Luckily, all passengers, including the driver and guard, were safely evacuated, though visibly shaken by the drama.
Travel Chaos to Hit All Day
SWR has slapped down a ‘do not travel’ warning for Surrey passengers. Services between Woking and London Waterloo are suspended, causing widespread disruption as train and crew availability spirals.
The chaos began just after 6 am on Monday, March 4, with initial hopes of clearing disruption by 10 am dashed. SWR now says services will be disrupted all day, leaving commuters stranded and frustrated.
Passengers Urged to Seek Alternatives
National Rail has confirmed tickets for March 4 are valid on March 5 services. Passengers are urged to use alternate routes, with tickets accepted on the London Underground, Great Western Railway, Elizabeth Line, Southern, London Buses, and CrossCountry trains.
Further disruption hits routes from Guildford to Wimbledon due to safety checks at Weybridge.
SWR labelled the incident “serious” and pleaded with passengers to avoid travelling between Woking and London Waterloo until further notice. The operator is racing to fix the problem and get the network moving again.
