Disney+ to Crack Down on Password Sharing from June
Disney+ Targets Password Sharing to Boost Revenue
Disney+ is ready to clamp down on password sharing in a bid to ramp up subscribers and revenue. The streaming giant revealed plans to take action against users sharing login details with friends and family not in the same household.
Bob Iger Announces Crackdown Starting This Summer
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger told CNBC that Disney+ will launch its first serious attempt to tackle password sharing in June in select countries. A full global rollout will follow in September. Iger said this move aims to reshape Disney’s streaming business into a model they can “genuinely feel positive about.”
Following Netflix’s Lead in Fighting Password Abuse
Password sharing has long plagued streaming firms, costing them millions. Netflix recently introduced measures to curb the practice and saw a surge in new paying subscribers as a result.
“Netflix is the gold standard in streaming,” said Iger. “They’ve done a phenomenal job in many different directions. If we can only accomplish what they’ve accomplished, that would be great.”
Streaming Wars Heat Up as Password Sharing Clampdowns Spread
Disney+ joining the crackdown highlights the fierce competition in the streaming market. With subscriber retention key to growth, more platforms are expected to roll out similar password sharing restrictions soon.
