Essex Driver Banned After Speeding at Nearly Double Limit and Swerving Into Oncoming Traffic

A 22-year-old motorist from Braintree, Essex, has been slapped with a six-month driving ban after clocking 55mph in a 30mph zone. The driver’s desperate attempt to dodge a speed camera saw him veer onto the wrong side of the road, putting other road users at serious risk.
Police Investigation Reveals Dangerous Stunt
The incident took place on January 15, 2023. Essex Police’s Roads Policing Support Team launched an investigation after spotting the dangerous manoeuvre. At Basildon Magistrates’ Court, the driver pleaded guilty to careless driving.
Serious Consequences for Reckless Behaviour
The court heard how the driver’s actions could have caused a major crash or injury. The culprit received six penalty points and a hefty fine of over £450, along with the six-month ban.
“Deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road posed a very serious hazard for any other road user and could have resulted in someone being seriously injured,” said an Essex Police spokesperson.
A Warning to All Drivers
The case highlights the importance of sticking to the Highway Code and obeying speed limits. Police warn that risking lives to escape speed cameras is not worth the consequences.
