Fury as Funfair Inches Too Close to Swan Nest in Bexley Park

Locals in Bexley are up in arms over a funfair edging dangerously close to a swan’s nest in Danson Park. The event, dubbed “Dinosaurs in the Park,” has sparked a wave of frustration and concern among wildlife lovers.

Dinosaurs in the Park Sparks Wildlife Alarm

Scheduled from May 18 to June 9, the funfair boasts life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and a crazy golf course — just under 20 metres from the vulnerable swan nest. Environmentalists warn the noise and crowds could disturb the nesting swans, potentially breaking wildlife protection laws.

Chris Smith of the Greenwich Wildlife Network said: “Danson Park is home to many bird species. We’ve called for protective fencing around the nest to shield these swans.”

Despite efforts, the funfair’s setup beside the nest has raised the stakes. Locals fear the noise and heavy footfall could cause the birds to abandon their home.

Locals Slam Lack of Consultation

Nicky Wilson, a member of RSPB Bexley, blasted organisers for ignoring the community. “If only they’d consulted us first, this could have been avoided before the funfair went up,” she fumed.

In response to public pressure, Bexley Council insists it’s working daily with organisers to tweak the event layout and protect the swans. Extra fencing has gone up, and signs remind visitors to respect the wildlife.

Council Juggles Funfair and Wildlife Safety

The council calls on park visitors to stick to the rules and keep dogs on leads near the lake. They vow to keep a close eye on the situation and make changes if needed.

Yet some residents remain unconvinced. They argue the event should’ve been relocated once the swan nesting site was confirmed.

Organisers assure the public they’re committed to protecting wildlife, obeying all relevant laws, and keeping disruption to a minimum as “Dinosaurs in the Park” roars into town.

This clash highlights the tricky balance between community fun and safeguarding nature — proving that in Bexley, it’s not just the dinosaurs causing a stir.
