Brighton Palace Pier Celebrates 125th Birthday

Today, May 20th, 2024, marks a momentous occasion for Brighton as the iconic Brighton Palace Pier celebrates its 125th birthday. Established in 1899, this Grade II* listed pleasure pier has been a central feature of Brighton’s cityscape and a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike.

Construction of the Brighton Palace Pier began in November 1889, intended to replace the Royal Suspension Chain Pier, which collapsed in 1896. Since its grand opening 125 years ago, the pier has witnessed a rich history of entertainment and evolution.

In its early years, the pier quickly gained popularity, becoming a frequently visited theatre and entertainment venue by 1911. Despite closures during wartime, the pier continued to host regular events up until the 1970s. The character of the pier shifted significantly after the theatre was damaged in 1973 and later demolished in 1986. This transition turned the pier into an amusement park, featuring various fairground rides and roller coasters.

Now managed by the Eclectic Bar Group, the Brighton Palace Pier remains the only one of Brighton’s original three piers still in operation. It stands opposite the Old Steine in the city centre, drawing countless visitors who come to enjoy its amusements, rides, and breathtaking sea views.
