Debt-riddled husband kills wife in desperate bid to fix finances
Massive debts lead to shocking murder
Robert “James” Hammond murdered his wife Sian Hammond at their home in Primes Corner, Histon, near Cambridge on 29 October last year. The court revealed Hammond was drowning in debts exceeding £300,000 and had been spinning lies for months to dodge payments to HMRC and a financial firm.
Life insurance and a deadly plan
The couple’s life cover, worth a whopping £450,000, was at the centre of the case. After Sian’s death, Hammond assured a financial company he’d be able to pay off his mounting debts using the payout.
Early morning call hides grim truth
At 2am the day after Sian’s murder, Hammond contacted police claiming he found her unresponsive. He steadfastly denied any involvement – until today.
Guilty verdict delivered
On 17 July, a Cambridge Crown Court jury unanimously found Hammond, 47, guilty of murder. Sentencing is set for 23 July, when he will face justice for his brutal crime.
