Brighton Palace Pier Hits 125 Years – A True Seaside Legend
Brighton Palace Pier is celebrating a major milestone today, May 20th, 2024. The iconic pier turns 125 years old, having opened back in 1899. This Grade II* listed landmark has been a fixture of Brighton’s skyline and a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike.
From Theatre to Thrills – A Storied Past
Construction of the pier kicked off in November 1889, designed to replace the Royal Suspension Chain Pier, which famously collapsed in 1896. Since its grand opening over a century ago, the pier has been at the heart of Brighton’s entertainment scene.
By 1911, the pier was a hotspot thanks to its busy theatre and variety shows. Wartime saw closures, but it bounced back with regular events until the 1970s. The pier’s theatre was badly damaged in 1973 and demolished in 1986, transforming the venue into the amusement park we know today, complete with thrilling rides and roller coasters.
Still Going Strong – Brighton’s Last Surviving Pier
Now run by the Eclectic Bar Group, Brighton Palace Pier is the only one left standing from the city’s original three piers. Situated opposite Old Steine in the city centre, it continues to lure crowds with its rides, fairground fun, and stunning sea views.
Visitors keep flocking to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the classic seaside experience – proving after 125 years, Brighton Palace Pier is still a beloved British icon.
