13-Year-Old Boy Carrying Replica Firearm Fatally Shot by Police in New York State

A 13-year-old boy, identified as Nyah Mway, has died after being shot by police in Utica, New York state. The incident occurred on Friday evening when officers stopped two youths who matched the descriptions of robbery suspects. One of the boys fled and allegedly pointed a realistic-appearing replica handgun at the officers. The boy was shot in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries.

The replica firearm, resembling a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, had markings, signatures, and a detachable magazine. Despite its realistic appearance, it only fired pellets or BBs. The officers involved—Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti—have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

The Utica Police Department expressed condolences to Nyah Mway’s family and pledged transparency throughout the investigation. Mayor Michael Galime assured the community that all relevant information would be made accessible. During a city hall meeting, emotions ran high as officials addressed the tragedy, emphasising the need for openness and understanding.

As the community grapples with this loss, questions remain about the use of force and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The body-worn camera footage is expected to shed light on the events leading up to the fatal shooting.
