Leeds Man Caught with Bomb and Knives Outside Hospital
Mohammad Sohail Farooq, 28, a Clinical Support Worker from Leeds, has been found guilty of preparing an act of terrorism. This follows a tense three-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
Terror Plot Foiled at St James’s Hospital
On January 20, 2023, Farooq was caught on the grounds of St James’s Hospital in Leeds carrying an improvised bomb, knives, and an imitation firearm. Nathan Newby, an inpatient at the hospital, bravely engaged with Farooq and calmed him down before alerting police – preventing what could have been a disaster.
Radicalised Online and Armed to the Teeth
Counter Terrorism Police revealed Farooq radicalised himself with Daesh propaganda. He managed to assemble a viable explosive and had plans targeting RAF Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire and St James’s Hospital. Farooq also pleaded guilty to possessing explosives with intent to endanger life and various firearms offences.
“Farooq’s intent to act on his extremist beliefs, mixed with personal grievances, posed a serious threat,” said Detective Superintendent Paul Greenwood. “Nathan Newby’s quick thinking prevented a devastating outcome.”
Hospital Staff Praised for Heroic Response
The staff at St James’s Hospital remained calm and professional throughout the ordeal, keeping patients and colleagues safe. Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ Chief Executive, Professor Phil Wood, praised their “strength and resilience” during the terrifying event.
Farooq’s sentencing date is yet to be set.
