ASB Soars as Benches Removed in Trowbridge Crackdown
Anti-social behaviour reports have skyrocketed in Trowbridge since April, jumping from 6 cases in 2023 to a whopping 51 this year. Issues include fighting, disorderly conduct, and rampant drug and alcohol use, particularly in a paved spot with four benches that had become a hotspot for troublemakers.
Benches Gone as Police and Council Step In
On Friday, July 12, Trowbridge Town Council joined forces with neighbourhood services and the Chamber of Commerce to patrol the trouble-hit area. The four benches were promptly removed in a bid to curb the anti-social antics.
NPT Sergeant Charly Chilton said: “Whilst this is not a permanent fix, it allows our neighbourhood policing team to work with Trowbridge Town Council, Wiltshire Council, and local partners on long-term solutions. This could include a revamped Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to ensure Wicker Hill and Trowbridge remain safe and welcoming for the community.”
Tougher Measures on the Horizon
While tackling criminal offences remains a priority, police admit their hands are tied without a current PSPO to control street drinking and related ASB. They are actively applying for new orders to gain more power to address problem behaviours and individuals causing havoc.
One local business owner commented: “I’m glad to see the benches removed, but the council needs to realise this problem will just shift around. We need ongoing support to identify hotspot locations and keep up the positive momentum.”
Community Patrols and CCTV Boosts Planned
Inspector Andy Lemon of Trowbridge NPT warned that displacement of ASB is common but reiterated the police commitment to keep Trowbridge safe. “We’ll keep working alongside partners and residents to make this town a secure place to live, work, and socialise,” he said.
The police will closely monitor Wicker Hill with reassurance patrols, encouraging local businesses and residents to get involved in community events and report any incidents. Plans include engaging the public via a mobile police station, reviewing CCTV coverage, and using dispersal powers to tackle offenders.
