Baby’s near-fatal attack: Man found guilty of attempted murder in Northampton
Man attacked baby after relationship breakdown
Radoslaw Zurek, 28, was convicted at Northampton Crown Court on Monday, July 8, after a six-day trial. The shocking case dates back to January 2, 2024, when police and paramedics were called to a flat on Victoria Road, Northampton, following welfare concerns.
Paramedics discovered Zurek in the bathroom with self-inflicted wounds next to a nine-month-old baby left in a baby bouncer covered with a blanket.
Brutal injuries led to immediate action
While Zurek was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, PC Tim Walker demanded a prompt check on the child. The baby showed bruises around the neck and petechiae on the face — signs consistent with strangulation.
Hospital scans confirmed the injuries, sparking a police investigation and Zurek’s arrest the following day on suspicion of attempted murder.
Court hears no comment from defendant
At a magistrates’ hearing on January 6, Zurek was charged with the attempted murder of a child under one. He was remanded in custody while awaiting trial. Zurek gave no comment to police and remained silent during his trial.
Guilty verdict leaves baby fighting for life
The jury at Northampton Crown Court found Zurek guilty of attempted murder, closing the door on any doubt. Sentencing is pending.
“Zurek wept when told the baby was safe and well,” said officers after his arrest, highlighting the tragic complexity of the case.
The harrowing attack has shocked Northamptonshire, shining a spotlight on the dangers faced by vulnerable infants at the hands of those closest to them.
