Ex-Footballer Joey Barton Charged Over Malicious Tweets at Eni Aluko
Joey Barton, once of Manchester City and Newcastle fame, now faces legal heat. The 41-year-old has been charged with malicious online communications after a volley of tweets aimed at football pundit Eni Aluko.
Tweets Spark Police Action
The tweets landed Barton in hot water after they aired during a BBC FA Cup match in January, when Aluko was commentating. Cheshire Police confirmed the charges relate to messages sent between January 1 and 18, now authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service. Next stop: Warrington Magistrates’ Court next week.
Prison Time and Fines Loom for Barton
If found guilty, Barton could face up to two years behind bars and/or a hefty unlimited fine. Barton hit back on social media, slamming the legal system. He posted:
“Crazy times we’re living in. Haven’t the police got enough on their hands? British system is becoming a Banana Republic. Lawfare used against its own citizens for having a dissenting voice. Not quite North Korea yet but won’t be long. Viva La Revolution.”
Who Is Eni Aluko?
Aluko is a respected former Chelsea and England international star who turned pundit after retiring in 2020. Her prominence adds weight to the case.
Barton’s Troubled Career Off The Pitch
Last October, Barton was axed as Bristol Rovers manager after nearly three years, following a string of poor results. This latest legal battle adds to his off-field woes.
The case has grabbed headlines and eyes will be on the court on July 30 for the next chapter in this football scandal.
