Rochdale Protest Ends Peacefully After Shocking Police Video
A protest outside Rochdale Police Station fizzled out peacefully on Wednesday night, sparked by a grim video showing a police officer kicking a man at Manchester Airport.
Disturbing Footage Sparks Outrage
The video, filmed at Terminal 2, went viral on social media in record time. It shows a police officer, taser in hand, kicking and seemingly stamping on the head of a man lying face down on the floor next to a kneeling woman. The same officer is also seen striking another man.
Police and Community Respond
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) addressed the incident on Thursday morning. He said:
“We understand the immense feeling of concern and worry that people feel about our response and fully respect their right to demonstrate their views peacefully. The protest held last night about our response at Manchester Airport has concluded safely, without incident.”
Chaudhry confirmed the officer involved has been removed from operational duties. GMP has also voluntarily referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for further investigation.
Community Dialogue and Official Scrutiny
The protest highlighted deep community concern over police conduct. GMP kept close communication with local leaders and elected officials to keep the demonstration peaceful and constructive. Chaudhry added,
“We have spent the evening listening to community feedback and will continue to engage with communities and elected members.”
GMP revealed three officers were assaulted during the arrest, including a female officer who suffered a broken nose. Home Office Minister Dame Diana Johnson and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham have both expressed serious concern. Burnham stated,
“I have raised these concerns with the deputy chief constable.”
Ongoing Debate Over Police Accountability
The incident has sparked a heated public and political debate about police behaviour and accountability. GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate is actively reviewing the case amid rising calls for greater transparency.
