Man Dies After Police Restraint on Borough High Street – Witnesses Urgently Sought
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an urgent appeal for witnesses after 34-year-old Adam Tidman died following an incident with Metropolitan Police officers on Borough High Street in the early hours of Saturday, 25 January.
Disturbance at Belushi’s Ends in Tragedy
The drama unfolded just before 1am when police rushed to Belushi’s restaurant after reports of a man causing a disturbance. On arrival, they found Mr. Tidman already being held by the venue’s security team. Officers then continued to restrain him outside the entrance.
During the restraint, Mr. Tidman became unwell. Paramedics were called to the scene and he was rushed to hospital. Despite intensive medical care, he sadly passed away on 11 February.
IOPC Launches Full Investigation
The watchdog was notified on the night of the incident and immediately sent investigators to both the scene and police stations involved. They’re gathering key evidence including police body-worn camera footage, CCTV, and initial officer accounts. All officers involved are currently treated as witnesses.
An inquest into Mr. Tidman’s death will be opened in due course.
Call for Witnesses to Come Forward
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “We offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Tidman’s family and all affected by this tragic event. We believe several bystanders may have witnessed the restraint or the events leading up to it. It’s vital we establish the full circumstances of Mr. Tidman’s death.”
