Man Dies After Police Restraint on Borough High Street – Witnesses Urgently Sought

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an urgent appeal for witnesses after 34-year-old Adam Tidman died following an incident with Metropolitan Police officers on Borough High Street in the early hours of Saturday, 25 January.

Disturbance at Belushi’s Ends in Tragedy

The drama unfolded just before 1am when police rushed to Belushi’s restaurant after reports of a man causing a disturbance. On arrival, they found Mr. Tidman already being held by the venue’s security team. Officers then continued to restrain him outside the entrance.

During the restraint, Mr. Tidman became unwell. Paramedics were called to the scene and he was rushed to hospital. Despite intensive medical care, he sadly passed away on 11 February.

IOPC Launches Full Investigation

The watchdog was notified on the night of the incident and immediately sent investigators to both the scene and police stations involved. They’re gathering key evidence including police body-worn camera footage, CCTV, and initial officer accounts. All officers involved are currently treated as witnesses.

An inquest into Mr. Tidman’s death will be opened in due course.

Call for Witnesses to Come Forward

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “We offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Tidman’s family and all affected by this tragic event. We believe several bystanders may have witnessed the restraint or the events leading up to it. It’s vital we establish the full circumstances of Mr. Tidman’s death.”

“Anyone who saw what happened or has any footage or information is urged to contact our investigators immediately to help piece together the facts.”

How to Help the Investigation

Community Demands Transparency

The tragic event has sparked worry among local residents about police use of force. Community leaders and advocacy groups are pushing for a transparent, independent inquiry to ensure accountability.

The IOPC has pledged a thorough investigation, aiming to determine if correct procedures were followed and the exact cause of Mr. Tidman’s death.
