Brace yourself UK – gloomy, soggy weekend ahead! The jet stream has shifted south, putting low pressure in the driving seat. That means a cooler, changeable weekend with rain hitting most areas.

Friday: Mixed Bag with Rain in the South

Friday will start drier and less windy in the north, with some sunny spells and scattered showers. Meanwhile, the south of England faces cloudier skies and rain bands creeping in, especially across the southwest later in the day.

Heavy Overnight Rain and Weather Warnings

After dark, heavy rain will sweep from southwest England across central and eastern regions, sticking around into the morning. Wet roads and spray are on the cards. Northern and western Wales, plus northeast Scotland, will also see heavy showers.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Severe Weather Warning for northeast Scotland from 10pm Friday to 10am Saturday due to persistent heavy rain that could disrupt travel.

“An area of heavy and quite persistent rain will develop across parts of north and northeast Scotland later on Friday evening,” said Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders. “This will continue overnight before turning showery on Saturday morning. We’re expecting 20-30mm of rain across a wide area, with up to 50mm in some spots.”

The Weekend Outlook: Showers Win

Once the overnight rain clears, expect a cool, unsettled weekend packed with showers – heavy and possibly thundery on Sunday. Some sunny spells will offer brief respite, with temperatures maxing out around 18-19°C.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

Monday follows a similar pattern with fewer showers, mostly hitting Scotland. However, clouds will thicken, and rain will move in from the southwest, bringing more unsettled weather UK-wide.

Temperatures will hover around or just below average for the time of year, though a few warmer spells may brighten up the southeast.
