Newhaven RNLI Lifeboats Rescue Stranded Boaters Twice in One Day
Soggy Sunday Start: Just after 9am on 28 July 2024, Newhaven’s all-weather lifeboat raced out to help a 5-metre pleasure boat taking on water three nautical miles south of Newhaven. The solo sailor sent out a desperate Mayday on VHF radio.
As the lifeboat neared, the stranded boater fired a red pinpoint flare. The vessel quickly sank, forcing the occupant into the sea. Luckily, their lifejacket inflated perfectly. A passing yacht kept the casualty safe until Newhaven RNLI scooped them up—no medical help needed.
Late Night Lifeline: Yacht Towed to Safety
Hours later at 11.20pm, the volunteer crew was back in action under pitch-black skies. The Severn class lifeboat launched to assist a yacht off Saltdean that had suffered engine failure and couldn’t anchor.
With no other options, the crew towed the disabled yacht all the way back to Newhaven harbour, ensuring a safe return for those onboard.
