Police are urgently hunting burglars who broke into the home of 101-year-old Betty Rout, making off with her late husband’s priceless World War II war medals. The raid happened between 10pm and midnight on Friday, June 28, in Cheltenham.

Medals Held Deep Sentimental Value

Mrs Rout was asleep when the intruders struck. She woke to the noise and saw the burglars leaving through her front door, carrying her stolen belongings. Among the stolen items were the irreplaceable medals awarded to her husband for bravery and service during the war — treasured keepsakes that mean the world to Mrs Rout.

The theft has shattered the centenarian and sparked outrage across the local community.

Police Plea to Find War Medals and Thieves

Gloucestershire Police have launched a full investigation. Detective Inspector Sarah James, leading the case, said: “This is a heartbreaking crime that has robbed a centenarian of irreplaceable memories of her late husband. We are determined to bring those responsible to justice and return these precious items to Mrs Rout.”

Officers are urging anyone who spotted anything suspicious near Mrs Rout’s home on the night of the burglary to come forward. They also warn people to report if they are offered the medals for sale, either online or in person.

The Cheltenham community, including local veterans’ groups, has rallied in support of Mrs Rout. They’ve condemned the crime, highlighting the medals’ importance as symbols of courage and sacrifice.
