Man Jailed for Facebook Comment Amid UK Unrest
Billy Thompson, 31, has been locked up for 12 weeks after a fiery Facebook comment linked to the ongoing civil unrest in the UK. He was found guilty of encouraging violence following his reply to a post about police efforts to stop violent protests.
Offensive Comment Sparks Legal Action
Thompson’s message read “Filthy ba**ards,” accompanied by emojis showing an ethnic minority person and a gun. The post he replied to concerned police issuing a dispersal order to try and control growing disorder.
Judge Demands Tough Sentence Amid Unrest
Despite Thompson’s lawyer claiming the comment was part of a private online chat with a family member and not meant to incite violence, the court rejected this defence. Judge Temperley stressed the need for a hard-hitting response because of the tense nationwide situation.
“It may be right that the starting point is a community order for this offence, but I am afraid this has to be viewed within the context of the current civil unrest up and down the country,” said Judge Temperley.
Warning Shot on Social Media Conduct
The jail term sends a clear signal that authorities are cracking down hard on online behaviour that could fuel violence during public disorder. Thompson was immediately remanded to custody, highlighting law enforcement’s zero-tolerance stance in these tense times. The case underscores ongoing efforts to maintain public order while tackling unrest across the UK.
