Sir Ian McKellen to Take Acting Break After Stage Fall
Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen, 85, is hitting pause on his acting career for the rest of the year. The “Lord of the Rings” icon suffered a nasty fall during a June performance of Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre, leaving him with wrist and neck injuries.
Injuries from On-Stage Fall Slow Recovery
In a candid chat with The Big Issue, McKellen revealed the accident happened during a fight scene in the play. He lost his footing, resulting in a chipped vertebra and fractured wrist that have taken their toll. “It’s emotional,” McKellen admitted. “We all trip all our lives, but at my age, you can’t always get up again.”
He confessed the fall has left him physically weak, forcing him to focus on rehab exercises. Despite this, he’s optimistic about his recovery. McKellen also expressed concern that the fall might be a worrying sign of ageing but insists he’s simply taking time off “because I want to, not because I need to.”
McKellen’s Role in Player Kings and Future Plans
The Burnley-born star played John Falstaff in Player Kings, a sharp reimagining of Shakespeare’s Henry IV by Robert Icke. McKellen credited a fat suit worn during the production for protecting his ribs and joints during the tumble.
Looking ahead, the actor teased a possible comeback as the beloved wizard Gandalf. Rumours swirl of new Lord of the Rings films, including The Hunt for Gollum directed by Andy Serkis. McKellen said: “Enthusiasm for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ shows no sign of abating. I may even be going back to play Gandalf again.”
Though details are scarce, he’s clearly excited about the potential projects, hinting that producers hope he’ll reprise his iconic role.
Beyond Acting: McKellen on US Politics
In a rare political turn, McKellen also shared his views on the ongoing US presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, underlining his engagement beyond the stage and screen.
