Hinsliff first appeared on Coronation Street in 1963 and 1977 in minor roles before taking on the iconic role of Don Brennan in 1987, a part he played for a decade. Don Brennan became one of the show’s most memorable villains, featuring in dramatic storylines that included kidnap, attempted murder, and a final showdown that ended with his car crashing into a viaduct.

Born in Leeds in 1937, Hinsliff graduated from RADA in 1960 before embarking on a successful TV career. He made his debut in Z-Cars and went on to appear in series such as Dixon of Dock Green, The Professionals, and Heartbeat. He also had a role in the 1977 war film A Bridge Too Far. His last TV appearance was in Heartbeat, before retiring from the spotlight.

Fans of Coronation Street have taken to social media to express their condolences, with many remembering him fondly for his portrayal of Don. RIP Don Brennan, a true Corrie legend,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

Hinsliff is survived by his wife, Judith, whom he married in 1967, and their daughter, Gaby, a journalist and columnist for The Guardian.

Geoff Hinsliff’s legacy on Coronation Street and his contribution to British television will be remembered fondly by both fans and his colleagues in the industry.
