Violent Thug Jailed for Brutal Bus Stop Attack in Maidstone

A vicious attacker has been locked up for nearly three years after savagely beating a man and stealing his phone at a Maidstone bus stop.

Unprovoked Assault Leaves Victim Injured

Damien McCann, 28, launched a brutal assault on the evening of 5 January 2020. The victim, who knew McCann, was waiting near Pad’s Hill bus station when McCann crept up from behind, knocked him down, then repeatedly punched and kicked his head and face. The victim suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured tooth.

Robbery and Jail Sentence

While the victim lay helpless, McCann grabbed a phone from his jacket and fled on foot. After weeks on the run, police arrested McCann from his Brompton Lane, Strood address. He denied the charges at Maidstone Crown Court but was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and robbery.

On 9 September 2024, McCann was sentenced to two years and nine months behind bars.

Victim’s Family Seeks Justice

“McCann was responsible for a truly cowardly assault, and he has demonstrated little remorse by denying the charges and forcing the victim to relive the experience in court. The sentence imposed reflects the viciousness of McCann’s attack, and I hope it brings some comfort and reassurance to the victim and his family,” said Detective Constable Mark Giles, lead investigator.

Though the sentencing offers some closure, the victim and his family continue to struggle with the trauma of the attack.
