UK Fuel Prices Plunge to Lowest in Nearly Three Years
Fuel prices are tumbling faster than ever this year. Unleaded petrol and diesel have both dropped by almost 7p a litre compared to last month, according to RAC Fuel Watch. As of 19 September, unleaded petrol averages 136.15p per litre—down from 141.26p early September and 142.86p in August. Diesel followed suit, falling from 145.99p to 140.87p in the same time frame.
Drivers Pocket Nearly £4 Savings on Full Tank
For UK drivers, this means nearly £4 saved on a full tank compared to just a month ago. Supermarkets offer even better deals, with unleaded at just 133.23p and diesel at 137.69p. Northern Ireland boasts the cheapest pump prices in the UK, with petrol as low as 131.5p and diesel at 134.2p.
RAC Predicts Prices Could Fall Even Further
RAC experts expect prices to drop more in the coming weeks. Petrol may fall to around 132p per litre and diesel to 138p—the lowest since mid-2021. The price plunge is largely thanks to lower global oil costs, now about $73 a barrel, and a stronger pound benefiting from falling UK inflation.
“It’s really encouraging to see pump prices coming down so rapidly, which is as good for drivers’ wallets as it is for keeping inflation in check,” said RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams. “Drivers should keep shopping around and use free tools like the RAC app to hunt the lowest fuel prices.”
