UK Throws £2.26bn at Ukraine’s War Effort

Britain has unveiled a massive £2.26 billion loan to boost Ukraine’s military in its fierce fight against Russia’s invasion. This fresh funding forms part of the G7’s colossal $50bn aid package agreed back in June at the leaders’ summit in Italy.

Cash to Supercharge Ukrainian Defence

The loan will fatten Ukraine’s military budget, funding vital gear like air defence systems, artillery, and other frontline essentials. This adds to the UK’s ongoing £3 billion yearly military aid, pushing Britain’s total support well beyond £12 billion since the war began.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, speaking alongside Defence Secretary John Healey while visiting Ukrainian troops training in the UK, said:

“Our support for Ukraine and her men and women fighting Putin’s aggression is unwavering and will remain so for as long as it takes. A safe and secure Ukraine is a safe and secure United Kingdom.”

Operation INTERFLEX, the UK’s training programme, has already prepared over 45,000 Ukrainian soldiers, and it’s now extended through 2025.

Funding Russia’s Defeat Using Its Own Cash

This loan is cleverly financed by profits from frozen Russian sovereign assets—ensuring Russia pays for its war crimes. The UK government is pushing new laws to fast-track this cash to Ukraine.

Healey added:

“Using the money from sanctioned Russian assets, we can help turn the tables on Putin’s war machine. This urgent funding directly supports Ukraine’s defence using proceeds that once fuelled Russia’s aggression.”

Sanctions Squeeze Russia’s War Chest

The UK and its allies have slapped the toughest sanctions ever on a major economy, blocking Russia from accessing over $400 billion—money that could have sustained its war for another four years. Russia’s defence now gobbles up 40% of its yearly budget, with daily casualties at record highs.

The announcement comes as Chancellor Reeves heads to the IMF annual talks in Washington D.C., ready to reiterate the UK’s unshakable commitment on the world stage. Just weeks ago, Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy at Downing Street, underscoring the UK’s full backing of Ukraine’s fight for freedom.

Britain’s Bold Message to Putin

This hefty loan sends a clear warning to Russia and the world: the UK stands firm with Ukraine. The G7’s $50bn ERA fund—with Britain front and centre—shows global unity against aggression and the defence of democracy.

Britain’s rapid and ongoing support makes one thing clear—when it comes to protecting freedom and international law, the UK isn’t backing down.
