Enfield witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday night as groups engaged in what residents have described as “fireworks wars” across several local areas. Police received numerous reports of fireworks being used in confrontations between groups, alarming locals and leaving streets littered with debris.
The clashes, reportedly involving groups of youths, saw fireworks set off at dangerously close range to people, homes, and passing vehicles. Social media footage captured the intense explosions, with some videos showing individuals aiming fireworks at each other in what police have termed “reckless and unacceptable behaviour.”
The Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in response to the incidents and are appealing to the community for information that may assist in identifying those involved. “The misuse of fireworks is both illegal and highly dangerous,” a police spokesperson said. “We urge anyone with information to come forward to help ensure the safety of the community.”
Local residents expressed frustration and fear over the events, with some describing feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods. “It’s terrifying – I was worried something might hit our house,” one Enfield resident shared. “People shouldn’t have to fear fireworks being used as weapons.”
This surge in fireworks-related disorder comes as authorities had already issued warnings about the dangers of fireworks misuse in the run-up to Bonfire Night. Local leaders are now considering stronger measures to curb such activities, including further restrictions on firework sales and usage during the holiday season.
