Warning as Fraudsters Pose as Cops to Target Tunbridge Wells Pensioners
Residents in Tunbridge Wells have been put on high alert after a gang of scammers pretended to be police officers, trying to con elderly locals out of their cash.
Fake Police Officers Demand Cash
On Thursday 16 January 2025, Kent Police were flooded with calls reporting scam attempts. Crooks rang five pensioners, claiming there was suspicious activity linked to their bank accounts. One victim was told they were part of an investigation by New Scotland Yard. The fraudster introduced himself as Detective Constable Mathew Riley, with help from “PC Chrissy”.
Victims were told to withdraw large sums of money “for the investigation” and that a courier would collect the cash. Luckily, nobody fell for the trick and refused to hand over any money.
Police Issue Stark Warning
“Thankfully, none of the intended victims parted with any money,” said Detective Inspector Chris Mayers. “These scammers are becoming more cunning, targeting vulnerable elderly people.”
“Remember – a genuine police officer will never ask for your bank details or money over the phone. If you get a call like this, hang up immediately and report it to Kent Police.”
How to Protect Yourself
- If someone claiming to be a police officer calls, take their details and end the call straight away.
- Wait five minutes, then ring 101 to check if they are genuine. In emergencies, dial 999.
- Never hand money or possessions over to a courier after one of these calls.
