Mother Jailed for 10 Years After Four Sons Die in Devastating House Fire
Deveca Rose, 30, has been slapped with a 10-year prison sentence following the tragic deaths of her four young sons in a house fire. The heartbreaking blaze claimed the lives of Kyson and Bryson Hoath, both four, and three-year-olds Leyton and Logan Hoath, in their family home in Sutton, south-west London.
Children Left Alone in Squalid Conditions
The boys were left alone while their mother went shopping on the evening of December 16, 2021. Their rented home was in a shocking state of neglect, strewn with rubbish and human waste. The fire reportedly started from a tea light or cigarette in the living room. Trapped inside, the boys hid under their beds but sadly died from smoke inhalation.
Judge Slams Mother for Neglect
At Old Bailey, Judge Mark Lucraft KC called the case “deeply tragic” and condemned Rose for abandoning her children in such a hazardous environment. He highlighted that her second trip to Sainsbury’s that day was unnecessary and her absence played a part in the fatal outcome. Rose broke down in tears as the sentence was handed down.
Dalton Hoath, the boys’ father, described the loss as “the worst day of my life,” adding he couldn’t express the depth of his grief.
System Failures and Family Heartbreak
Social services had previously raised concerns about the children’s welfare and the filthy living conditions, but no effective intervention occurred. The boys hadn’t attended school for three weeks before the fire, raising further alarms.
The family’s sorrow was echoed by their great-grandmother Sally Johnson, who said, “The thought of them crying and screaming will haunt me forever.”
Despite a neighbour’s desperate attempt to rescue the boys, firefighters could only recover their bodies after entering the blazing, hazardous home. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community and brought to light serious questions about child protection failures.
Deveca Rose was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter and will now serve a ten-year jail term for the deaths of her sons.
