Convicted Arsonist Jailed for 13 Years Over £1.8 Million Blaze at Cambridgeshire Car Recovery Yard
Deliberate Fire Destroys Drug Evidence and Vehicles
Charlie Martinson, 34, from Grays, Essex, has been locked up for 13 years after setting fire to a car recovery site in Eaton Socon, Cambridgeshire. The blaze, started in a Luton van housing £500,000 worth of cannabis, erupted early on February 24, 2023.
The fire quickly engulfed 28 other vehicles, including those seized as critical evidence in major police cases. Martinson was convicted at cambridge/" title="Cambridge" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Cambridge Crown Court of arson with reckless disregard for life.
Massive Damage and Structural Collapse
The inferno was so fierce it partially collapsed the warehouse roof, causing catastrophic damage to the building.

“Some family members may never get justice for their lost loved ones,” said Detective Constable Lauren Kirkup, highlighting the severity of the destruction.
The site owner, who spent 23 years building the business, now faces financial ruin with losses soaring over £1.8 million.
Police Hunt and Arrest
CCTV caught Martinson and accomplices breaking into the yard. Martinson used a petrol container to ignite the flames before fleeing. Police tracked the getaway car and soon arrested him.
He refused to answer questions but was charged and brought to trial.
Harsh Sentence and Judge’s Verdict
Judge Philip Grey labelled the case as “organised, brazen criminality” and a “determined attempt to destroy evidence.” Martinson was sentenced to 13 years in prison plus an extra four years on licence.
Firefighters and Police Responded
Fire crews from Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire battled the massive blaze. Eyewitness photos showed thick smoke and vehicles reduced to charred shells.
“This was a reckless crime that endangered lives, devastated a local business, and destroyed crucial evidence in multiple serious investigations,” added Det Con Kirkup.
