A significant fire broke out this afternoon at a seven-storey residential building on Wards Wharf Approach, Silvertown, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The fire reportedly originated in a ground-floor flat around 2:55 PM, leading to a swift callout of the London Fire Brigade, alongside London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police.
Emergency Services Respond Swiftly
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has deployed multiple fire engines.
Firefighters are currently tackling the blaze, working to contain it and prevent further spread within the building.
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service are also on the scene, attending to any residents requiring medical assistance. At this time, there have been no confirmed casualties, but several individuals are being assessed for smoke inhalation.
Evacuations and Safety Measures
Residents of the building and nearby structures have been evacuated as a precaution. The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off Wards Wharf Approach and surrounding streets to allow emergency services safe and clear access to the site.

Silvertown residents are being urged to avoid the area to facilitate rescue operations. Those who live nearby are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke billowing from the building.

Eyewitness Accounts
Local residents reported hearing alarms and seeing thick smoke emanating from the ground-floor flat before emergency crews arrived.

Sarah Evans, who lives in a neighboring block, described the scene: “I saw smoke pouring out of the windows, and people were rushing out of the building. The fire brigade was here very quickly, and they’ve been working hard to get it under control.”

Another witness, Tom Richards, added: “There was a lot of panic initially, but the firefighters were so professional and calm. It’s frightening to see something like this so close to home.”
Investigation and Road Closures
While the cause of the fire remains unknown, LFB investigators will assess the scene once it is safe to do so. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including electrical faults or accidental causes, but will conduct a full inquiry.
Significant road closures are in place along Wards Wharf Approach, with diversions affecting nearby routes, leading to traffic congestion in the Silvertown area. Transport for London has advised commuters to plan alternative routes.
