Emergency services rushed to Kennington Underground Station this morning after a fire broke out on Platform 1, directly on the tracks. The incident occurred at Kennington Park Road, London, leading to the temporary closure of the station and significant disruption to Tube services.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) received reports of smoke emanating from the tracks just before prompting a swift response. Several fire engines and crews were dispatched to the scene, along with British Transport Police and Transport for London (TfL) staff.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke filling parts of the platform as commuters were evacuated to safety. “It was really scary — the smoke was building up quickly, and station staff moved us out fast,” said one passenger who was waiting for a train when the incident occurred.
The fire, is believed to have started on the track itself, here have been no reported injuries.
The incident has led to significant service disruptions on the Northern Line, with delays and partial suspensions reported. TfL advised commuters to seek alternative routes and expect delays throughout the morning.
British Transport Police confirmed they are also investigating the incident but currently do not believe there was any foul play. “We are working with our partners to establish the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the network,” a spokesperson said.
Kennington Station remains closed while safety checks are carried out, and services are expected to be restored once the area is deemed secure.
